Sanitation workers on strike against the decision of the Municipal Corporation
Mumbai city sanitation workers to go on strike against Mumbai Municipal Corporation’s decision to hire vehicles and services from contractors In this regard, the employees also held various meetings and protests, but the current sanitation workers are unhappy as all these things have not yielded any results. Therefore, after the counting of votes in the meeting held on Wednesday evening, the employees have taken the stance of a strike.
Municipal employees have been doing the work of collecting garbage in Mumbai for years, but the Municipal Corporation has decided to hire vehicles and services based on them from contractors. Therefore, all sanitation workers in Mumbai city are united against this decision. The labor unions have formed a joint struggle committee regarding this. This includes employees at all the municipal squares and in the transport department. There was also a discussion on what our position should be against this decision taken by the municipal corporation. The vote on whether to strike or not was held on July 15. The counting of votes for this vote took place at 11 am on July 16, i.e. today. After this counting, 97% of the employees said that this is the decision to go on strike. The counting process was held at the Municipal Mazdoor Union office in Lower Parel. Ramakant Bane gave this information on this occasion.
The employees have now said that the strike will be irreversible if no solution is found to the strike decision. This will benefit the city’s large-scale waste collection and various related processes. In Mumbai, a large amount of waste is generated every day, so workers are definitely needed to collect this waste. If this strike occurs, the citizens of the city will have to face various problems on a large scale due to this strike. Therefore, we appeal to the current municipal administration to find an early solution to this strike.
The number of sanitation workers in Mumbai city is also large. In the voting held on the 15th, 8850 sanitation workers in the city participated. In this counting, 8665 people voted in favor of the strike. While 93 employees opposed the strike, the votes of 92 employees were declared invalid. The counting process was completed in this manner and the decision was announced at 11 am on the 16th.The future of this strike will be determined by all directions, under the leadership of both the workers’ struggle committee and the action committee.
The municipal corporation has decided to procure vehicles and services from the contractor itself. This will put the jobs of the sanitation workers at risk, these employees say, and their jobs will be affected. Therefore, these employees demand that the decision taken by the Municipal Corporation be immediately withdrawn and the existing process should continue in this matter. They also demand that the applications issued for all these processes be cancelled.
An action committee has also been formed to announce the decision regarding the strike of these sanitation workers. This action committee will work under the leadership of former MLA Kapil Patil and labor leader Suresh Thakur. Also, under his leadership, all employees will gather at Azad Maidan at 10 am on July 17.Also, the employees were told that if Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis visits in this regard, the final decision regarding the strike will be taken after his meeting. Therefore, everyone’s attention is focused on what decision the state Chief Minister and the municipal administration will take regarding this strike.
