Instructions to prepare an action plan for removing silt from Powai Lake
Actually, this year’s rainfall is a bit different from the annual rainfall. This time, the rains arrived in May itself, and due to this, most of the lakes in Mumbai are quite full by the end of June.In addition, there is ample water available in all the seven dams that supply water to Mumbai, and lakes like Powai Tulsi Vihar are also full at this time.Every year, this lake fills up in July during the monsoon season, but this time it started filling up in June itself. Various scholars and environmentalists have raised doubts about whether the lake filled up due to the lack of silt removal. Therefore, Ashish Shelar gave instructions to prepare a related action plan.Mary has also conducted a survey regarding the pollution in Powai Lake.Orders were given at this time to prepare an action plan for various issues in the powai lake and submit the relevant report.
Municipal Corporation issues special action plan for lakes
Powai Lake is actually considered the oldest lake in Mumbai. Initially used for water supply, this lake was later used as an outlet for industrial wastewater as well as water from various industrial companies. Therefore, often due to the sewage in this lake, the quality of this water and its biodiversity are different. The Mumbai Municipal Corporation makes special arrangements for this lake.To maintain the quality of the wastewater in this lake, the Municipal Corporation also works to clean the lake at the right time with the help of various machinery and workers.Special mechanisms of the Municipal Corporation are working to ensure the quality of water in lakes and to take proper care of them.Water storage in all seven dams supplying water to Mumbai was also abundant this time. Also, water overflow can be seen in these ponds used for sewage at this time.
The proper transportation and storage of the sludge after it is removed was also discussed in the meeting. The Mumbai Municipal Corporation is currently inspecting various places in Mumbai.Since untreated sewage is discharged into the Powai Lake, aquatic life can also be seen growing in this lake.Various environmentalists have expressed doubts about whether sediment has formed in this lake for various reasons and whether this sediment has caused the dam to fill up early.
It has also been advised to take special measures to remove the accumulated silt from the lake and transport and store the related silt.Often, the silt removed from the drains or lakes near the city is left lying on the side of the road. As a result, this silt is once again carried back into the lake and drain with rainwater, and the situation remains the same. But the administration has been asked to make special arrangements for its transportation as well, so this will increase the number of environmentalists present and also help in cleaning the lake.
