The landslide occurred in the Khindipada area of Bhandup west. The incident took place in the Sainiketan Housing Society opposite Omega School.The protective wall near the hill collapsed due to incessant rains and this wall fell. Fortunately, no one was injured in this incident.
It has been raining continuously in the Khindipada area for the past two days, so due to the continuous rain, this protective wall, as well as the soil layer on the hill, also cracked due to the rain.When both the wall and the pile of earth came down at the same time, the eyewitnesses in this area captured the incident on their mobile phone camera and this video is also currently going viral.
Due to landslides during the monsoon season, the Mumbai Municipal Corporation also issues eviction notices to people whose homes are located in slippery areas.This incident took place in the city. In the incident in the Khindipada area, four houses collapsed on Tuesday, while two houses collapsed on Wednesday. Today, around 11:15, the soil subsided and these houses also came down with this soil.
Most of the huts in this Khindipada area are on the land of MHADA and the District Collector’s Office. Living in the huts on the slippery hillsides is actually dangerous.People in this area often have to risk their lives, and landslides are also common during the monsoon season.There are approximately 200 to 250 such places in Mumbai city, out of which 74 are considered extremely dangerous. Most of these are in the eastern suburbs of Mumbai.Even though some parts of the western suburbs, such as Yadav Nagar, Kurla, Jogeshwari, Vashi Naka, Chembur, are also among the potential landslide hotspots, the population living in these areas is large.
The number of people living in huts on hills in the urban areas of Malabar Hill, Tardeo, and Ghatkopar in the suburbs and Khindipada in Bhandup is high.There are approximately 15 to 20 thousand huts on these hills located in various wards of Mumbai and the number of people living in these huts is between one lakh and one and a half lakh, so a large number of people risk their lives to live on these slippery hills.
The Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for various cities including Mumbai. Due to the heavy rain, the landslide in the Khindipada area collapsed and came down with a pile of mud.Six houses have been destroyed in this incident so far. Since these houses are empty, no lives have been lost.
The geographical structure of Mumbai is also unique, so even in the city, people live in slums built on the slopes and slopes of hills and mountains. There are various places in the city where their number is higher in the eastern suburbs.In the last 31 years, 310 people in the city have lost their lives due to landslides. Therefore, to prevent such incidents from recurring, the Mumbai Municipal Corporation issues notices to residents of this area during the onset of the monsoon season.The Municipal Corporation is also currently making special efforts to prevent incidents like the one in Khindipada area of Bhandup West from happening again. They are also being alerted at various highly dangerous places in the city.Similarly, keeping in mind the intensity of the rain, special arrangements are currently being made in various areas. Notifications in this regard have also been issued in the relevant wards of the city.
