Work on Virar Alibaug Multipurpose Corridor accelerates

This ambitious Virar Alibaug Multipurpose Highway project of the state government is 126 kilometers long and the work on it is planned to be done in two phases by MSRDC i.e. Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation.Under that, proposals were sought in about 11 packages for the 95-kilometer stretch between Navghar and Balwali, and the proposals related to that had also arrived during that period. But while the total cost of the contract was expected to be around Rs 19,000 334 crores, the tenderer came for the contract at a rate that was around 26% higher, i.e. Rs 26,300 crores, which led to various processes being stalled. Also, the major problem that arose during the construction of this virar alibaug road was the increased demand and the need to raise funds for the land required for this highway and its related land acquisition.

This virar alibaug project is an ambitious project of the state government as it will definitely be a game changer in addressing the massive traffic problems in the Mahamumbai metropolitan region.Initially, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) was tasked with building this highway, but due to various stalled processes, they were not able to complete the work related to this highway to the extent that it was completed. This highway was handed over to MSRDC i.e. Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation and it was decided that the work of this highway would be completed under it.

The major problem of land acquisition for this highway has now been resolved. The state government will guarantee the loan required for land acquisition, said state Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday therefore, the project has received a major relief as the state government has now taken over the responsibility of guaranteeing the land acquisition loan, which was the biggest problem in the highway process. And due to this, it is seen that land acquisition and consequently road work have gained a lot of momentum. This decision has accelerated land acquisition and it has also been said that approximately 30 percent of land acquisition has been completed. It is seen that the work on this road has now gained momentum to a large extent as the state government has taken a total of Rs 38,013 crore for land acquisition and loan guarantee for the same, including Rs 22,259 crore for land acquisition and Rs 14,763 crore for its interest.

Why was the work on the Virar Alibaug multi-purpose corridor stalled?

Initially, proposals were sought in 11 packages for projects of state government importance and various proposals were submitted in this regard. This was mainly due to a large increase in costs due to a variation of about 26% for a contract worth Rs 19,334 crore, which led to a significant increase in costs, which in turn increased the cost to approximately Rs 26,300 crore.Due to this, the land acquisition work for this highway was largely stalled, due to which the pace of this work was slowed down, but now the path for this land acquisition has been cleared. Therefore, this multi-purpose road will definitely be helped to be completed at the earliest.
